Building Mindfulness

An interlocking brick-based program of mindfulness

Annie is the creator and facilitator of a play-based mindfulness program targeted towards schools, community groups, educational facilities and mental health care organisations.  Building Mindfulness introduces the concept of mindfulness to workshop participants through creativity and offers valuable mindfulness techniques that can be added to emotional tool-belts and used to enrich lives.

Interlocking building systems such as LEGO are a recognisable tool that can be used for artistic pursuits, engineering, mathematics, physics, literacy, team building, education, expression and much more.

Within the Building Mindfulness program, the following topics are built on with interlocking brick systems in an open and trusting space. Bricks are used as a tool for communication and offers hands on tasks that reinforce powerful positive messages. These topics may include:

  • Cognitive thinking, how to stop and think through building processes
  • Navigating situations that arise when we don’t have all the pieces
  • Problem solving and teamwork for your building goals
  • Communication styles and techniques when creating
  • Positive parenting and relationship building through creativity

Why is brick building a perfect way to exercise mindfulness? 

Mindfulness is all about relaxing, gaining that extra element of self-awareness and being grateful for your subconscious actions in a conscious way. Acknowledging each breath as you inhale for example, is a mindful practice. For Annie, her choice is play for mindful relaxation because it helps her unwind, but also brings excessive joy, and it turns out that 8 in 10 adults agree that play helps them relax too.

Building with bricks is the perfect way to exercise mindfulness. It pulls you into your present moment, it directs your focus to your fingertips, it offers a wholesome, creative goal that is relaxing and calm, it lights up the brain with thoughts about patterns and connection and your senses of touch, hearing and sight are excited by colour, sound and texture. And it’s joyful, bright and fun so you can build for yourself and you can include the people you love when you’re building too. 

Class sizes

Building Mindfulness workshops can be presented to groups of all ages and sizes. From small groups of 4-6, up to groups of 500+.
